Shed report to Committee July 2023

General Attendance is currently steady with between 15 and 20 sheddies turning up.

Front desk diary The front desk diary set up by Grant Pinkham is working well as we now have a fully transparent system to track the jobs as they come in and are completed. It is really important for members to log all activity in the diary so that we have an accurate record of our day-to-day activities.

Outside Community projects

Arc Welder One of our arc welders was sold by Colin Johnstone to a client in Brightwater. Wayne Logan and Colin Johnstone delivered the welder.

Rake handle replacement A rake handle was repaired for a member of the general public by Richard Watson.

Gate build and fit Two gates were built for a member of the public by Colin Johnstone.

Grove Street Kindergarten A corner cupboard unit at Grove Street Kindergarten was collected by Wayne Logan and Elwyn Thomas, modified by Richard Watson and then delivered and installed by Richard Watson and Wayne Logan.

Rake handle replacement A rake handle was repaired for a member of the public by Richard McBride.

Van conversion Another van conversion was completed for the Car Company.

Cheese box completion A cheese box for a member of the public was by completed by Elwyn Thomas.

Picture frame repair A mosaic picture frame from a member of the public was repaired by Colin Johnstone.

Rat traps Another batch of 70 rat traps were completed by Colin Johnstone and the team.

Higgins Heritage Park machining Kevin Roughton completed a machining job on the lathe for the Higgins Heritage Park.

Bandsaw job Wayne Logan completed a small bandsaw job for neighbour which was paid for in the form of a delicious ginger cake and a cash donation.

School carpentry module Chris Gladstone has been quietly working behind the scenes on a carpentry activity unit for St Pauls school.

Nelson Art stands This major project headed by Jeff Sewell and many other members is finally completed. The shed has also negotiated a storage deal with Nelson Art which will result in some more income for us.

Marine beacon models Richard Watson machined a number of model marine beacons for Marine Studies tutor Brian Tear. These beacons were of a particularly high standard.

Puzzle repair Richard Watson repaired a wooden puzzle for a member of the public.

Chest of draws refurbishment Robert Shade refurbished and constructed a shelf in a chest of drawers.

Ladder/Ramp units Richard Watson completed another of these units, this time for Grove Street Kindergarten.

Box base repair Richard Watson repaired a box base for a member of the public.

Rutherford Kindergarten compliance Richard Watson and Wayne Logan completed some updates to equipment at Rutherford Kindergarten to ensure compliance with safety standards.

Raised garden timber drilling Denis Moriaty cut to length, drilled and locked the sections together with steel bars on some timber sections for a member of the public to assist her with a raised garden project.

Rake Handle repair Chris Gladstone replaced a rake handle for a member of the public.

Cable Bay table repair Denis Moriaty repaired a picnic table at the Cable Bay reserve.

Table repair Richard Watson repaired a outdoor seat for a neighbour of Wayne Logan’s. Payment was in the form of cash plus biscuits for morning tea.

Nelson Central Kindergarten Richard Watson replaced/repaired a number of wooden jigsaw puzzles.

Cliffton Terrace School seat Jeff Sewell machined some wooden seat frames for the school.

Hospice Bed supports Colin Johnstone in conjunction with Hospice volunteer Dick Rundle has designed and produced a bed raising/tilting block system.

Waimarama Community Gardens project The community gardens are currently working with Colin Johnstone on the possibility of producing raised gardens but this project will depend on acquiring timber at a suitable price.

Table repair Richard Watson repaired, and Wayne Logan delivered a small table for Anne Davey. A cash donation was made.

Nelson Intermediate School block project Richard Watson and Trent Roberts completed this project.

Surf boat conversion This impressive project by Peter Llin, Denis Moriaty and Colin Johnstone has now been completed and installed. An excellent article and picture appeared in the local media.

Community Library Box A member of the public has approached us with a community library box concept. The dimensions and concept have now been decided so construction can now begin.

Inhouse Projects

Nelson Art racks Grant Pinkham has built a rack system for the Nelson Art frames

Electrical updates Mike Gough continues to update our electrical systems. Mike has set up both of our drill grinding systems and has built a platform to ensure that distorted timber can machined back straight on the thicknesser.

Members Projects

Boats Richard Mc Bride’s boat project is still work in progress. Ian Carpenter’s boat project has slowed somewhat no doubt due to the winter weather. Doug’s projects Doug Stewart continues working on his model military landing craft.

Ron’s Caravan Ron Briggs caravan project has slowed somewhat.

Denis’s Projects Denis has been working on a glass house for his daughter and has recently purchased a “flying saucer/space craft”.

Dining Table Richard Watson gave Wayne Logan advice and assistance regarding a dining table that Wayne was restoring.

Donations

Power boat Ken Nicholls donated a Relex Camino powerboat complete with a Mercury 90hp outboard as a fund raiser. We are currently in the process of carrying out preliminary work to evaluate where we go with this project.

Trailer Retired doctor Bruce Kay has donated a small trailer. Safety

As traces of asbestos have been detected at the shed we must be mindful not to enter the taped off areas.
